Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Review
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Review
So today I’ll write up my first review for a complete anime season. I did this review a while ago but never had a good medium to project it besides on forums where it was largely ignored. That ends today
I present you with my Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai review.
I hope you enjoy
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni + Kai (When they Cry + Answers)
Genre: Psychological, horror, other
Aired: 2006, and 2007 (third season OVA end of 2008-2009)
Made by: Story by 07th Expansion, animated by Studio Deen (Fate/stay night, etc)
First off, let me just say that if you were to review just season one, or just season two, you would probably say that it has a mess of a story (especially season one). So these are the two seasons combined.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (season one) follows the tale of Maebara Keichii as he returns to his birthplace of Hinamizawa following “just a funeral”. He meets his old school buddies (Rena Ryuguu, Mion Sonozaki, and the younger, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjo). They all attend your typical one room school house in rural southern Japan, have the same teacher and are very close friends. Mion Sonozaki sets up a club for “playing games for risk” which usually involves card games, or games of sport wherein the loser gets a “punishment game”, typically involving the sole male lead, Keichii, losing. As Keichii gets more re accustomed to his village, he finds out about the Watanagashi festival, and the “Curse of Oyashiro-sama” which everyone year one person dies, and another goes missing. However, the “curse” goes deeper than what it appears, and Keichii and the gang slowly become involved in it more than they’d like.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is told in “arcs”, meaning that you’ll (you’ll think
) you are watching the same scenario play, but from a different perspective until close to the end of season one, were the viewer is given a lot of hints at something deeper and a “common thread that binds”. The truth is much more mysterious than it appears on the surface.
(No spoilers, very hard to summarize without spoilers, but I’ll do my best
)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (season two) explores the same events for the most part, but it is focused around the only person who knows the truth behind the mystery and that persons struggle to overcome it. The theme that is portrayed in Kai is that everyone must work together to overcome it all.
I can’t explain much about Kai or else you’d see more spoiler tags than actual text haha, but I’ll point out the good and the bad now.
Good
- Amazing character development
- Greatest atmosphere to any anime I’ve scene
- Blending of genres is done extremely well
- Very unique setup overall
Bad
- First seasons animation is sometimes very poor, especially when it involves heavy amounts of motion. (This has been remedied in Kai though)
- Some people might not like the “arcs” and that’s understandable, but it makes more sense in Kai
It’s funny, the show starts off seeming like a typical Harem drama, and then, at the end of the episodes, you start to see the real story.
Overall, it is my favorite anime ever, and I highly encourage you to check it out if you approve of my review.
