Lucky Star OVA Review
Lucky Star OVA Review
The anime is Lucky Star, and it has developed a sort of internet cult following (meme-like even) over the past year or so. This is largely in response to the various times within the show where it directly quotes other shows and pop culture in general.
The OVA was announced to be in production in an issue of Comptiq stating that was in production and due out in June of 2008. However it was subsequently delayed and finally released on September 26th, 2008. It features six side stories all bunched into forty-minutes, some of which are extremely bizarre and eradic.

- Beginning features a stand off with Cherry-chan (the dog)
The beginning follows as Hayuri comes over Minami’s house for a sort of get together. As it turns out, they never really focus on the get together at all, instead it proceeds to follow the life of Cherry-chan, Minami’s large white dog and what he does with his food (yes it’s as absurd as it sounds, yet it’s still entertaining).
After roughly five to seven minutes of this, it cuts over to a scene involving the main cast (Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and their teacher, Nanako) playing what appears to be Konata’s latest MMO that she is addicted to.
Eventually it shifts over to one of the most bizarre elements in Lucky Star (and that’s saying something..)
Kagami’s family is going to a dance and assumes that she does not want to go (which she says they are correct) but despite her objections, Konata magically appears wearing a wizard costumes (Haruhi reference #1). Konata then begins to play Cinderella and proceeds to use magic and gets Kagami to attend the ball.
Once they arrive, Kagami finally convinces Konata that she does not want to be at the ball and they leave, just like that. On their way back, the clock hits midnight and the house stops moving, stuck in the middle of the road. A long series of events ensues, and all is fixed.
It then shifts to a volleyball game between the friends at school. It focuses on the relationship between Kagami and Tsukasa and how Kagami, for a lack of a better phrase, wears the pants in the relationship.
In the end, Kagami’s team (more importantly, just Kagami) win the match, and it ends with Tsukasa pledging to someday beat her more mature sister at something someday.
For one of the final events in the OVA, the main cast is seen on a hiking trip together at some sort of a camp. On the way, they, of course, get lost and walk around in circles several times, annoying one another as they go.
Eventually, Kagami’s cell phone gets its signal back and Hikaru (one of their teachers) gets through and proceeds to yell at Kagami saying that they’re worried sick and they’re coming to get them. Eventually, alls well that ends well as they make it back to the camp and have a nice dinner to fill their empty stomachs.
You think thats the end of it? Well their is one more scenario which tops them all in terms of bizarreness (This is FLCL worthy right here!)
They main cast is seen for one final time at a pet store. The scenario is set in a completely different theme then the rest of the show or OVA. It’s almost a grim, dark, mysterious, horror type of mood. Eventually it starts to feel like you’re not even watching the same show, as it starts to seem like NGE. I don’t really understand this part of the OVA, but it’s Lucky Star, what do you expect? At that, it shows one last quick scene involving the guy from Comiket in the original show and then proceeds to show the always quirky ending movie
And thus ends the anticipated OVA release of Lucky Star. Now how do I think it stacked up? Well I think it was just fine for an OVA, but comparing to the actual full show is a disgrace. I can appreciate a slice of life comedy like every other guy, but I like them to have at least some basic plot structure. Overall, based on my grading scale, I’d give the full show a 9/10 but the OVA a 8.5/10. If your a fan of Lucky Star’s characters, then this can’t be missed.
